We had to cancel a trip and Expedia cancelled the flights and car but not the hotel. They are required to before the hotel can issue the refund. I messaged, emailed and called several times and they kept saying they are working on it. Then they said they didn't hear from the hotel so there will not be a refund. They expect people to just accept what they say but they don't follow their own procedures. I wish AARP did not partner with Expedia as the travel agency is not honest and they can ruin your trip and cost you a lot of money.

Helped to completely ruin our Xmas

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Original review Dec 29, 2023

I had booked a hotel with AARP/Expedia.com for Xmas Day night. I thought I had purchased the travel insurance. However, after a family member became severely and unexpectedly ill requiring a trip to the ER, we unfortunately had to cancel.

I called the hotel immediately to be within the cancellation window. I was told they couldn't cancel the reservation and I had to call AARP/Expedia and it had to be approved by the General Manager. I was told to have AARP/Expedia call back the next day at 10:00am, which I dutifully did. However, my cancellation and refund were refused by the General Manager. Long story short.

I spent my entire day on the phone talking to "Supervisors," but with no help. Neither would refund my money. When I asked what I had paid for with the cancellation insurance I was told it was not on my reservation. This was news to me.

After wasting an entire day of getting nowhere. I finally called the Comfort Suite Corporate Offices and when they looked up my reservation there was no contact information listed. My phone number and address did not match my account and I was listed as having checked out. I do not know how I could have checked out, when I never even checked in?

Then, as per the Corporate Offices instructions I recalled AARP/Expedia to ask that they recall the hotel. They refused saying there was nothing more that could be done. The Corporate Office told me probably AARP/Expedia had imputed my information incorrectly. However, when I brought this to attention of AARP/Expedia, they denied there was any error.

Going forward I will never use their travel service again or stay at a Choice Hotel. .

You have a right to your opinion. However, the only intention as to why I posted this event was to advise other travelers to be forewarned and guarded, so that they might avoid the terrible experience I encountered.

Guest

You do not have to worry about my character. I have learned my lesson.

I will never use them again.

However, when you are on a senior and on a fixed income you need to watch your money. Hopefully, you never have the same experience. You are right I admit it didn't add anything to our Xmas as a family member was suffering.

Hope the family member does well. My comment was probably a bit harsh, but I don’t like a takedown of all parties involved when it’s not justified. Expedia is the only one able to authorize a refund.

Guest

Choice Hotel has nothing to do with your issue. You paid Expedia.

They decide whether to authorize the refund. You went cheap and used a third party site for the room.

The hotel would have refunded no questions asked with 24 hour notice if you booked directly. I must add that it speaks volumes to your character that you claim this incident ruined your Christmas while a family member was suffering.

Unethical Practices

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AARP Travel Center Powered By Expedia - Unethical Practices
Booked a flight several months ago to travel today, Dec 20, 2023. Additional charges were paid for a carry on for a very expensive flight. The new practice for Expedia is to book your flight with two different flight carriers and you end up paying fees for each way. AARP should not partner with a business with a company that instead of supporting consumers is ripping them off.

"Third-party" bookings cause you to be treated like a third-rate customer

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We had a magnificent month-long trip to Ireland. The ONLY problems we encountered were the hotels we booked through AARP. There seems to be some disdain among the hotels when you book through a third-party - in this case AARP's partner Expedia. We were treated like third class citizens. We lost out on a refund because they couldn't give it to us directly. Therefore, any savings by booking through AARP was lost and it cost us more than it should have. In another case, they refused to give us a statement upon checkout, saying I had to reach out to Expedia for it. Ridiculous! I demanded to know at least how much they were charging my credit card. It was like wrestling the number out of a surly front desk associate. They REALLY don't like "third-party" customers.

Prepaid rental car at Budget is worth $0

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AARP Travel Center Powered By Expedia - Prepaid rental car at Budget is worth $0
I prepaid for a rental car with AARP Expedia with Budget at DFW Rental Car Center. Upon arrival, the only cars ready were for customers using Budget's Fastbreak program. All other customers had to stand in a line of 60 people with two agents servicing each one in 15 minutes or more. Not wanting to delay my vacation for hours I went over to Hertz and got a car right away, but at higher rates than I usually pay for reservations in advance. AARP Expedia refused to refund anything, even though Budget provided nothing. I guess Budget makes a lot of money scamming people by making them wait hours for a prepaid rental, and AARP Expedia is their scam enabler. I am out $440 for a 4 day car rental. Since the car is prepaid, I see no reason why they could not have the car ready without waiting for hours to see an agent.

Wrong date and Expedia would not help even with insurance

I booked a Hotel for December 11th on December 11. When the booking confirmed, the date was changed to the 25th. I called immediately to cancel and rebook for the 11th. Expedia said that the hotel would not cancel and rebook. The hotel said that it was Expedia deal to cancel since it was a a 3rd party booking. I even purchased travel insurance and Expedia still would not fix it. I booked for the 11th through the hotel directly. Expedia would not cancel for the 25th so I was stuck with it

What was supposed to be a "package deal" they only booked part of

AARP Travel Center Powered By Expedia - What was supposed to be a package deal they only booked...
Updated by user Aug 28, 2023

Oh yeah - I actually booked two vacation packages to Las Vegas - one was cancelled because they closed Tampa Airport before the storm. The other was the mess I described.Although I was promised a $50 gift card for each reservation I never got either.Bait-and-switch dishonest con men.Do not trust them.

Original review Aug 28, 2023
I was trying to fly to Las Vegas ahead of Hurricane Idalia so I tried to book a package deal on AARP -Expedia including a flight to Las Vegas, a hotel for a week and a flight back. Typically, if one segment of the package deal is not available they don't just book the rest of it - but that's what they did to me. I couldn't get a flight to Las Vegas but they booked the hotel and the return trip anyway. And I have no way to get to Las Vegas. This would be like trying to book a package deal and there are no hotels available but they book the flights anyway. This is a clear screw up by AARP - Expedia but they won't just cancel my reservation and issue a refund. I'm trying to get the hotel in Las Vegas to say they will refund the money - I was on the phone and emailing for 4 hours today while I was supposed to be preparing and evacuating for Hurricane Idalia. This is the worst sort of con/fraud. Never, ever, trust anything these people say and NEVER, EVER book a vacation or flight using their online automated system. Do it through a human being - because with the online booking God knows what they will stick you with. One of the worst travel experiences of my life and a complete fraud and con. These people are crooks and should be shut down. AARP should be ashamed to lend their name to this project.

Reserved a car through them, went to pick up the car and Avis had no cars, none

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I reserved a car through AARP Travel Center, the first time I've used them. I got a timely confirmation indicating my car had been reserved and it included an Avis reservation number. I went to pick up the car at the time indicated on the reservation and there were no cars, zero. The Avis location said don't trust a third party as they have no idea what their stock of cars might be. I've never had this issue with any other 3rd party in my life. I was shocked. It completely messed up our plans for the entire day. When I returned home I called AARP Travel Center to register my complaint. They were very generous with their apologies, but what I really wanted to know is why and how they are going to fix their business so this doesn't happen in the future. They had no idea on how to address. They tried to shift the blame to Avis but I said they were the ones who gave me the confirmation so it is their issue. I was also surprised that they offered me no compensation. I ended up loosing hours of my (and my 3 travel companions) day, plus reserved a car at a higher price. They could have at least offered to pay the difference in the car rental fee I had to pay. But they said their "policy" doesn't allow them to do anything like that. To anyone else thinking of using AARP Travel Center - don't. They don't take responsibility, they don't compensate their customers, they don't know how to run a business.

I rented a car through site with Budget I bought the CDW insurance and when I made it to my destination, I was told that the insurance that I purchased was not valid and I purchased with Budget. The woman at the counter stated that they do this all the time and that I would need to contact AARP travel directly for refund. I contacted AARP they say that they will have to contact Budget directly before issuing refund. So now it has been over a week no contact from AARP travel or from Budget. They claim not to have an email so that I can submit proof that I was charged for the insurance twice. So now I am being given the run around and out of over 235 because not only did they charge for insurance twice they didn't honor the price that I originally reserved are not willing to do anything to help resolve issue.

2nd and 3rd night, they booked me a king at Surestay Raddison. No elevator and no 1st floor rooms. Walked up 4 flights of stairs to get to 2nd floor outside balcony. Upon reaching the room, the room next door had the door open and I didnt look in but saw a parrot in a little cage on the floor, the next room down someone standing in the doorway smoking. Hmm- permanent residents?Walked in. It was an old Motel Six. Stinky like cigarette smoke. Asked the wife if she wanted to go somewhere else- she said tomorrow. Woke up at 11:30 to pop pop pop- gunfire. Sounded like it was right next door. 10 seconds later pop pop and could hear someone run by. Probably the parking lot below. Then my wife tells she been hearing knock knock every hour on the door of the room next to ours. Im thinking drug deals but my wife says no, she looked inside and it was a lady of the evening. No other details from this stay. Booked my own room at a Best Western the last night so at least my wife had one comfortable night.

Was a victim of bait and switch with AARP/Expedia Fox car rental

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I went on AARP/Expedia travel website on March 6th and looked for cars for an upcoming trip in July. I chose a standard SUV on FOX rental cars that said it would be a Dodge Journey or similar vehicle. The price was to be $371.56. I was familiar with the size of the Dodge Journey and knew it would meet my needs, so reserved it. When we got to the rental office of Fox car rentals at the airport in Denver, Colorado, on July 18, 2023, I was told they did not have and never had Dodge Journeys in their fleet. I was told that we would have to take another smaller vehicle for the price I was quoted. There were 5 people plus luggage that were going 150 miles and we were told that we needed to upgrade to a Dodge Durango and the cost would be $749.00. Feeling we had no other recourse at that time, we agreed. I would NEVER do business with Fox Rental Cars in the future and am VERY disappointed in AARP/Expedia for recommending this company to their members
